Gannett Fleming Inc., Red Lion Municipal Authority engineering consultant, used 3-D Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a collaborative tool during plant design of the Authority’s new water treatment plant, one of the first in the U.S. designed using BIM. “With BIM, it was much easier to view all of the rooms and equipment within the building,” said Keith Kahwajy, manager/superintendent for Red Lion Municipal Authority.

Red Lion plans to construct a new plant with a capacity of 4 (expandable to 6) million gallons per day to deliver optimal water quality to its customers. BIM enabled project stakeholders to see the facility constructed through a 3-D computer model before shovels hit the dirt.

The 3-D computer model improves cost estimates, provides more accurate construction bids, and results in fewer change orders, helping to keep Red Lion water customer rates low. A more efficient engineering process, BIM did not cost Red Lion more than a traditional design drawing approach. It also provides a great visual tool for Red Lion to share information about its water treatment process with the public.

Although the terms BIM and 3-D model are sometimes used interchangeably, BIM is more than a 3-D model. BIM incorporates data and intelligent design tools into a 3-D model. The BIM process completes all design work on this common model, where it stores information, such as model numbers, motor horsepower, power requirements, and connection requirements.

BIM also eliminates coordination problems during construction. It can be used for construction sequencing and can be linked to operation and maintenance software used by water treatment plant operators when construction is complete. BIM provides a powerful method of design communication to support Red Lion’s ultimate goal of reliably providing high-quality drinking water.

The authority supplies drinking water to customers in several York County, Pa., municipalities including Red Lion Borough; portions of Chanceford Township, Windsor Township, and York Township; the Windsor Borough Authority; and the Dallastown-Yoe Water Authority. Focused on providing customers with a safe and reliable drinking water supply, Red Lion is making significant improvements to its treatment plant to maintain the top-notch service that customers expect and to comply with regulations.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) today unveiled a new PSA campaign featuring artwork designed by the creators of the hugely popular video game webcomic Penny Arcade. Juri Peterson is a Navy wife and mother of two tweens from Lakeside, CA. Everyone in her family is a gamer. “We make judgment calls on each and every game,” Juri says in her winning contest entry. “Rating summaries are a good start to the decision-making process.”

This campaign is the latest of ESRB’s ongoing efforts to educate parents about the tools at their disposal. ESRB engages in various public education initiatives including PSA campaigns with retailers, professional sports teams and elected officials including governors, attorneys general and legislators.

Since their inception in 1994, the ESRB ratings have become a trusted resource for parents when choosing computer and video games. According to the latest research conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates and commissioned by the ESRB, 85% of parents with children who play video games are aware of the ESRB ratings, two-thirds use them regularly, and over three quarters consider the rating system “very helpful” in allowing them to choose games for their children.

The e-Tint® AX-10 inserts satisfy multiple demands on the road: safety, control, and convenience, all in a timely manner. Now riders may easily install an insert into their faceshield and eliminate the need to carry extra visors or wear sunglasses inside their helmet. This state of the art technology also improves riders’ visibility and greatly reduces eye strain in rapidly changing light conditions.

The inserts mount to nearly all standard faceshields by adhesive. The liner is removed from the adhesive gasket on the back, the insert is centered and aligned on the faceshield, and then it is pressed into place. No tools or special pins are required. Then, riders have the option to mount an adhesive backed button to the front of the faceshield for manual tint control. The insert is easily switched on and off by simply pressing the button. The e-Tint® AX-10s may also be used in automatic, light-sensing mode. A built-in photo cell changes the tint of the visor automatically, so riders may keep their hands on the bike and off of their helmet.

Additional features include a permanent anti-fog coating eliminating the need for re-application, like most wipe or spray anti-fog solutions. This feature is further enhanced by the double lens system. Air and moisture that is inevitably trapped between the insert and the polycarbonate faceshield will not cause fogging. In addition, the AX-10s are conveniently equipped with a rechargeable Lithium Polymer Ion battery (with built-in protection). The battery is easily recharged via a supplied micro USB cable.
